Why heavy noise reduction makes a voice sound metallic

Graphic titled heavy noise reduction makes voices sound metallic, with measured drops of about 20 dB in the noise floor, 11 dB in the voice, and 18 dB in brightness.

A denoised voice can sound cleaner and worse at the same time. The hiss drops, the file gets quieter, and the voice turns thin or metallic. That usually means the filter removed tone along with the noise.

The numbers below come from one synthetic 7-second clip tested on 11 October 2026. It is not a studio voice, not a real room, and not a guarantee for your recording.

The short version

Match the loudness of the cleaned file to the original before you decide it is better. Then listen to the breaths and the S sounds. If those are gone, or the voice rings, use a lighter setting or a different tool.

A quieter file is not automatically a better voice.

What we actually measured

We ran a synthetic noisy voice through a browser tool called Remove Audio Noise, on its High setting, and compared the downloaded WAV with the input.

  • Noise floor: about −17 dBFS down to about −37 dBFS, roughly 20 dB less hiss.
  • Overall loudness: about −16 dBFS down to about −27 dBFS, so the voice itself got about 11 dB quieter.
  • A rough brightness measure: about 18 dB lower.

The published short did not level-match that pair. This article is the correction. If you only hear that the hiss is gone, you are partly hearing that the whole file got quieter.

Why it sounds metallic

Speech is not only the vowel. Breath, lip noise and the high end of S and T sounds tell your ear that a person is there. A strong noise filter treats a lot of that as hiss. What is left is a smoother, thinner tone. On headphones that thin tone often reads as metallic, watery or robotic, even when a waveform looks clean.

Level-match before you judge

Turn the cleaned clip up until it feels as loud as the original. Then A/B on headphones:

  1. Is the room hiss lower in the gaps?
  2. Can you still hear a breath before a word?
  3. Do S sounds stay crisp, or do they lisp and ring?
  4. Does the voice feel smaller than the original?

Keep the strongest setting only if the hiss is lower and the voice still sounds like the same person. Otherwise step back one setting.

Three jobs people mix up

Three cards: remove vocals, reduce noise, and cut bass. Each card says these are different jobs.
Vocal removal, noise reduction and a bass cut solve different problems.

On the same day we also split a separate 7-second synthetic song with Candid Tools. It returned an instrumental file and an acapella file. That is vocal separation, not noise removal. It will not fix room hiss, and a denoise tool will not pull a singer out of a song.

Low rumble and too much bass are a third job. Cutting bass is not the same as removing hiss. We did not run a bass-cut demo in this test.

Limits

  • One synthetic clip cannot predict a real podcast, a phone memo or a noisy street recording.
  • These tools were free on their own pages when we tested them on 11 October 2026. That can change.
  • Heavy reduction can also invent a warble on music and a lisp on speech. Listen, do not trust the waveform alone.
  • If the noise is louder than the voice, record again closer to the mic. No filter can fully invent a clean take.

Short version of the same idea: 3 audio tools that feel illegal to know.

Disclosure: Bytesweavers made that short. One card in it is the Google Play listing for our Android app Bass Reducer Pro. We showed the listing only. We did not demonstrate the app’s audio effect, so do not treat the listing as proof that it cleans a voice.
